Bertie to officially open County Sligo’s plush facilities
The eagerly-awaiting grand opening of County Sligo Golf Club’s plush new clubhouse environs will be undertaken by An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, on Friday, April 29. The new development – which was largely completed last year – received rave reviews during the West of Ireland Championship over the Easter weekend (the first real chance the club had to showcase the overhauled building). The opening of the new development at County Sligo signals the completion of a very important phase in the club’s development, and its timeliness is immense considering the packed programme the club faces into this season. County Sligo will host the Connacht Seniors Championship at the club next week, and later this summer will once again play host to the top Irish amateurs in the game when the Golfsure Interprovincial Championships come to the club. In between, the club will also host the qualifying rounds of the Barton Shield tournament – in which County Sligo advanced to the semi-final, and Strandhill the final last year. County Sligo were the first club west of the Shannon to win the Shield.
County Sligo’s efficiency in developing a first-class golfing product is, of course, undisputed given their success at the AIB Golf Club of the Year awards – which were inaugurated in 2002. On the first occasion of their staging, the Rosses Point club walked away with the ‘Club of the Year’ award, and also scooped the national award for communication. Far from resting on their laurels, they have since driven ahead with the ambitious new clubhouse project, which will reach its final culmination very soon when Mr Ahern cuts the tape on the new development. An Taoiseach is an avid golfing enthusiast, and his keen knowledge of some of the game’s greats – including Christy O’Connor Snr – made him an obvious choice to the cut tape when St Anne’s links celebrated their official opening in 2003.
