Michael goes from pop to cop
By Gerry McLaughlin
A young Sligo man has traded a possible life in top of the pops for a career in An Garda Siochana. For former Westlife hopeful Michael Garrett, it was a case of going from top of the pops to top of the cops. Michael was one of 185 graduates from the Garda Training College at Templemore who passed out as gardai. The Strandhill man who also worked as a model, was a member of boy band IOU when pop guru Louis Walsh signed three singers-Shane Filan, Kian Egan and Mark Feehily from Sligo. He performed with IOU in shows at Dublin’s Point Depot and the RDS, supporting bands like the Backstreet Boys. Michael and Graham Keighron were by-passed and went to different careers. But a source close to Michael Garrett said he was “delighted with his new career.
“It was a great day for him and his parents Michael (Snr) and Bernie. “He had his taste of fame but this is what he really wanted to do. Michael Garret’s first assignment will be patrolling the quiet Galway village of Clifden. He spent six months training in the Garda college and is expected to be taking home around E300 per week as a trainee garda. Speaking earlier this year he said: “Of course it would have been great to go on to a top pop group but that’s just the way it goes. “I am genuinely happy for the lads but I am concentrating on the career path I have chosen.
