French cabaret combines with gypsy music
Gypsy band Koshka and French chanteuse Caroline Moreau make a welcome return to Sligo on Friday, July 15. Those who take the opportunity to enjoy the exceptional talents of this French singer and the world famous gypsy/jazz band during their Irish tour this July, are guaranteed to enjoy a rare musical treat. Koshka, comprise two Russian conservatory trained violinists who left before the days of perestroika and a guitarist from Scotland. The charming Lev Atlas (of Rostov String Quartet, Rachmaninov Trio, Scottish Opera Orchestra), fiery Oleg Ponomarev (ex Loyko) and Nigel Clarke (ex Hue and Cry) are all virtuosi. Caroline Moreau has been wowing Irish audiences since 2002, when she took over Bewley’s Cabaret Theatre in a haze of heavily accented patter and superb showmanship.
Her show “Crime Passionel” - a heady melange of songs by Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg and Edith Piaf, among others - was delivered with passionate conviction and became a sell-out in the space of weeks. In a recently published ‘Four Star’ review of Caroline’s new CD, ‘Paris is Burning’, the Irish Times said: “Timeless and unapologetically contemporary, Caroline Moreau’s music belongs to another time and yet manages to root itself in the present with a rare vitality.” Tickets for this concert should be bought in advance from the Model box office on (071) 9141405 or from Third Wave Music, O’Connell Street, Sligo. Alternatively, if you live in the West of Sligo, you can see Caroline and Koshka perform together at the Ballina Street Festival Fringe on Wednesday, July 13.
