Arts week promises laughter, tears and more

The Royal Theatre in Castlebar celebrates its first arts week from Monday October 24 to Sunday October 30, incorporating music, comedy, dance and drama.
The event begins with a highly anticipated performance by the RTE National Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra were in the County Mayo town on Monday conducting a day-long workshop for classical musicians.
This Tuesday, October 25, they will appear at the Royal Theatre from 8pm, performing a programme which includes Mozart's Symphony No 40, Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet" an the immensely popular Barber's Adagio
The Adagio is a work of genius. Originally written for string quartet, then arranged for string orchestra, in this form it became not only Barber's most popular work but an unofficial American anthem of mourning, played after the deaths of Presidents Roosevelt and Kennedy.
Ballet Ireland will take to the theatre stage on Wednesday night, October 26 at 8pm with their homage to one of the most important figures in ballet, composer Serge Diaghilev.
Responsible through his founding of Ballet Russes for launching the careers of hundreds of world renowned dancers, Diaghilev will be remembered through some of his many compositions, performed by Ballet Ireland.
Opera group Carl Rossa will perform their award-winning production of Gilbert & Sullivan's best-loved show "The Mikado" for two nights on October 27 and 28.
Fittingly this production celebrates the 120th anniversary of the play.
Paul Carrack, lead singer with Mike & The Mechanics, one of the most underrated bands of the late 80s and early 90s, will stop in to Castlebar on his solo tour around Ireland on Saturday night, October 29.
Paul has shared a stage with some of the seminal bands of the last 30 years including Ace, The Undertones, The Smiths, The Pretenders and Squeeze.
He has also contributed to albums by Eric Clapton, BB King, Simply Red, Van Morrison and Elton John.
Rounding off the week of art and culture is comedian Des Bishop who brings his completely new "Fitting In" show to the West coast on Sunday night..
The show is based on Bishop's new TV programme "Des Bishop Fitting In" which is due to start broadcasting later this autumn.
The programme follows American-born Des as he visits some of the worst trouble-spots in Ireland. His show is full of witty social observations based on his experiences.
