Sligo women show their computing skills

A group of 11 women got their first taste of computing after they completed a beginners course recently.
The participants, all from the Nu-Haven Enterprise Centre on John Street, completed the course on Microsoft Word. The course was run at the CMD Training Institute in Dunally under the instruction of Eithne Gallagher.
The course was run over a 10-week period from September to December and saw the women learn what uses the computer programme has.
Projects co-ordinator at the Nu-Haven Enterprise Centre, Mary McMorrow said: "This course is part of the ongoing training that the women receive."
In total, there are 24 women attending the centre, which provides them with a range of learning opportunities.
This computer project was funded by the Women’s Development Programme, which comes under the umbrella of the Sligo Leader Partnership Programme.
The centre runs a variety of services for its clients. Each client is provided with an equal amount of extra curricular activities and training. A number of users take up FETAC courses in training such as craft, personal effectiveness and food and cookery.
Other opportunities for users include the Dust Busters Cleaning Service and the Perfect Press Ironing Service. Both of these initiatives involve clients becoming part of the workforce.
The centre, which opened in November 2001, will have a stall at the Origin Market at IT Sligo in the run-up to Christmas this year. They will display hand crafted Christmas cards and decorations, wedding invitations which is a new service, along with numerous crafts, which will make ideal stocking fillers. They will also be designing their own window display for the festive season.
