Kilronan Castle to become a 5-star hotel
The areas of north Roscommon and east Sligo are set to benefit from a new E50 million five-star hotel in the region. Work is expected to start within weeks on turning the former Kilronan Castle into a 81-bedroom hotel with leisure facilities. This follows the decision of An Bord Pleanala to the go-ahead to the Hanly Group from Elphin, County Roscommon, to develop the castle. The facility will also have a conference room and it is also planned to build 60 holiday homes. According to the developers up to 150 letters of support had been sent to An Bord Pleanala by the people of the parish of Kilronan and this contributed to the Board’s decision to grant permission.
Paraic Noone, from Keadue Development Association, and Mary Shivnan from Ballyfarnon Community, issued a statement saying: “The development will substantially increase tourism within our catchment area and provide desperately needed employment both full time and part-time over the surrounding area.” It is envisaged that upwards of 200 people will be employed when the five-star hotel which is costing in the region of E50 million to renovate and build is operational. A further 200 people will be employed during the construction stage.
