Riverdance star to open Shaylyn Arts Centre
Dancing supremo Colin Dunne, of Riverdance fame, will officially launch the Shaylyn Traditional Arts Centre in Leitrim this weekend. Dunne, known to many for his appearances on RTE show Celebrity Jigs n’ Reels, will arrive in Ballinamore, county Leitrim for the launch this Saturday, March 24. This centre will be the home of traditional music and dance for the region. The centre will be the base for a number of firsts in Ireland and is supporting 18 new jobs in the town, 15 of these being for teachers. From the end of March it will run the first part-time third level training option for Irish dancers and musicians in Ireland. This is being done in association with the University of Limerick, currently the only other providers of this level of training in the country, only full-time. In addition it is running the first ever course exploring Irish dance and Ulster Scots dance together. It is establishing Ireland’s first traditional talent agency and it is offering classes for adult beginners in a variety of instruments as well as in Irish dance, set dance etc.
Finally, from September 5 to 7, it will run an International Dance Festival with guests from around the world in Ballinamore. This event will feature a week of dance workshops, lectures and performances for local and international guests This has all been made possible by cross border funding and has come from the vision of well-known Leitrim-based Irish Dance Company Shaylyn, run by Jane Gilheaney. Shaylyn Irish Dance Company were granted significant cross border funding from Interreg and Border Action for two complementary projects, that have seen the establishment of this centre. The funding totalled €500,000. Dedicated classes for adults and teens (all levels) in a choice of Irish dance, set dance, seán nós dance, traditional guitar, flute, tin whistle, bodhran, banjo, bouzouki, accordion and fiddle. You'd better book early for this celebration and a chance to kick off what truly is an exciting project for the region.
