PEOPLE of all ages swelled the evening traffic around a balmy Sligo Town on Friday last for Culture Night; four hours of events held throughout the town.
The various activities on offer ranged from lighting workshops in the Hawk’s Well to poetry reading in Castle Street to large outdoor art projections at the rear of the Yeats Memorial Building in Castle Street.
Singer Sinead O’Connor was a surprise attendee of the Culture Night. Sinead and her son Shane sat in on a special reading of Yeats poetry for children, read by Stella Mew of the Yeats Society.
Special ‘culture shuttle’ buses ferried in crowds of people from outside of Sligo and late services were laid on the bring them home again. The buses became part of the Culture Night with performers, including a barbershop chorus and a traditional group, playing on board them as they drove towards Sligo town.
Artist in residence Ciara Layden delivered some arresting images under the title “The Dress Up Box” which were projected onto the side of a building at Rockwood Parade and many milling around the town stopped on Hyde Bridge to have a look at them.
Venues ranged from the Glasshouse Hotel and Tobergal Lane Café to various art galleries, and even a working garage was utilised to deliver the widest range of free events ever to be offered to the Sligo public in one night.
