A guitarist recognised as one of the finest on the planet, Pierre Bensusan, will be performing in Furey’s Sheela Na Gig in Bridge Street on December 16 as part of a fourteen date nationwide tour.
Born in Oran, French-Algeria, in 1957, Pierre Bensusan’s family moved to Paris when he was 4.
He began formal studies on piano at the age of 7 and at 11 taught himself guitar.
Influenced in those early days by the folk revival blooming in Britain, France and North America, Bensusan began first to explore his own diverse musical heritage and then moved to the horizons beyond.
At 17 he signed his first recording contract, and one year later his first album Prîs de Paris (1976) won the Grand Prix du Disque upon his debut at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland.
Today, Pierre Bensusan’s name has become synonymous with contemporary acoustic guitar genius, long ago before the terms New Age or World Music were invented.
His influences are global but begin and end in himself. Pierre Bensusan is an acoustic visionary who combines sensibility with shadings of ethereal jazz, pop, ethnic and classical melodies with a feel to soothe and remove the listener to a warm, luxurious mindset.
Working exclusively in the unusual DADGAD tuning, Pierre has developed a bitter-sweet melodic approach that incorporates Folk, Celtic, Jazz, Impressionist, Brazilian, Mediaeval, Latin, North African rhythms, wordless vocals, French songs and more.
Bensusan has established himself as a compelling concert performer and a stellar contributor to world-wide music festivals.
International tours and innovative recordings have established him as, in the words of pianist George Winston, “one of the truly gifted musicians of our time - he plays the guitar as if it were the very soul of himself.”
Pierre is a musician who takes chances, and as such he is delving into many unique and previously unexplored techniques and sounds.
The Bensusan family lives in the French Champagne countryside, near Paris. Several times a year Pierre tours Europe, North America & Asia.
Intrepid, warm, focused and entertaining, Bensusan is not without irony, his subtle and infectious humour complementing his passionate intensity.
His concerts take the listener on a special journey to musical realms of the most rarefied sort, whose vibrations travel a long way into his listener’s souls.
